The AIT DC Laboratory is a unique European platform for developing and testing direct current technologies. Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, it enables realistic testing of high-power components—from switchgear and fuses to systems for renewable energy and e-mobility. Industry and research partners benefit from comprehensive validation and development services, supporting innovations that shape the future of energy supply.
The low-voltage direct current network laboratory currently under construction will enable practical testing of modern energy systems in a network. At its heart is a modular DC microgrid with a bus voltage of 350 V, which integrates real generators, storage systems and loads. Photovoltaics, a small wind turbine, battery storage, a bidirectional charging station and an electrolyser with storage are all integrated.
A flexible test bench is on display, where both mechanical and power electronic protection concepts can be tested. The focus is on personal protection, line protection and fault protection in the DC range. To this end, the setup includes interchangeable protection components, power electronic circuit breakers with fast tripping characteristics, configurable interconnection in the protection scheme and high-resolution measurement systems for time sequences.
Network reactions in the DC grid can also be systematically recorded: dynamic current and voltage curves, energy feed-back, harmonic components of power electronic converters, and interactions between generators, storage systems, and DC charging technology. In this way, the laboratory combines component evaluation with integral system testing, creating a robust basis for the design, protection coordination, and operation of future DC supply networks.
